At Learning Circles, women in agriculture gather to hear from each other and agricultural resource providers in their local communities. To gain insight into the learning circle model, click here to listen to a few testimonials from women learning circle participants. Information is shared on practices and programs that support soil health, water quality, climate resilience, farm viability, and/or legacy planning. These learning circles are free to attend.

The Farm Bill and You: What To Know and How It Impacts You

The farm bill is a package of legislation passed roughly once every five years that has a tremendous impact on farming livelihoods, how food is grown, and what kinds of foods are grown. Covering programs ranging from crop insurance for farmers to healthy food access for low-income families, from beginning farmer training to support for sustainable farming practices, the farm bill sets the stage for our food and farm systems. Join this session as we learn more about how this bill impacts us all and how to advocate for an effective bill that includes all of us!
This Coffee Hour is cohosted by our friends and community partners Black Family Land Trust, Kentucky Black Farmers Association, and Kentucky State University Extension. Funding is provided by Southern Extension Risk Management.

What: Rotational Grazing & Pasture Management Strategies for Farming Operations
When: Wednesday, June 26th | 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Description: Join us to learn about the relationship between soil health, rotational grazing, and good pasture management. Father-daughter farmers Pete and Nicole recently transformed conventionally managed corn into a healthy, active pasture for their growing beef operation. Everyone who identifies as a woman in agriculture is welcome to this free learning circle pasture walk, so please register in advance! This event will allow participants to connect with fellow land stewards and producers and support everyone in learning together. We will discuss ways that improved pasture management can support the health of the land, your herd, and our community’s food security. Shanna Shaw from NRCS will discuss how to evaluate a healthy pasture and identify infrastructure needs, grazing patterns, and seed mixes.
What: Small Ruminant Herd Health
When: Monday, July 1st, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Description: Join us to learn about managing herd health! PRO-Livestock Small Ruminant Specialist Jess Waltemyer and veterinarian-farmer Jen Gabel will guide us through a discussion on health concerns for sheep and goats. Bring your questions! We will tour Meadow Run Goat Dairy, which currently milks 250 goats for chevre production. Everyone who identifies as a woman in agriculture is welcome to this free learning circle. Lunch is provided, so please register in advance! This event will allow participants to connect with fellow land stewards and producers and support everyone in learning together. We will discuss how to keep your herd and/or flock healthy and productive.
What: Sustainable Poultry Production
When: Friday, July 12th, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Boston Valley Farms

Description: Join us to learn about sustainable poultry! Cornell Extension poultry specialist Amy Barkley will guide us in selecting the right breeds, establishing ecologically beneficial production, troubleshooting pests & diseases, and processing. We will tour a 5A-certified on-farm processing center and watch a demonstration. Everyone who identifies as a woman in agriculture is welcome to this free learning circle. Lunch is provided, so please register in advance! This event will allow participants to connect with fellow land stewards and producers and support everyone in learning together. We will discuss full-circle sustainable poultry production, from breed selection, housing, pests & diseases to processing and marketing.

Description: You’re invited to gather for an on-farm learning circle and conversation for women and non-binary military veteran farmers, hosted by American Farmland Trust and Garden Raised Bounty (GRuB)! If you’ve been curious about how to incorporate bees into your farm, for both pollination and to produce a product, this learning circle is a great place to start.
